CAPITALIZING ON BRAND EQUITY
With the success of their iconic yellow-bungied lumbar packs Mountainsmith made waves in the backpack market. This success helped them build a considerable amount of brand equity and recognition among consumers in the outdoor industry. Their follow-up product would need to leverage and maximize this equity as much as possible in order to continue building on their industry success.
UNDERSTANDING THE CORE USER
Mountainsmith realized their customers were using their lumbar packs in extreme circumstances which demanded a higher level of performance than that which was being offered. They turned to Modaliti to help them develop a lumbar pack that could keep up with these fast-paced users.
EXTREME INNOVATION FOR EXTREME USERS
In 2006 Modaliti partnered with Mountainsmith and designed a series of speed-oriented lumbar packs. The result was the Sprint Hip Pack and the Epic Lumbar Pack. Both of these performance packs featured 4-point compression, on-the-go access to hydration and a pack suspension system designed for maximum ventilation and user comfort.
