The Audiovase™ passive speaker is a simple and intuitive audio solution that uses surface geometry to double the volume of your smartphone's speaker without Bluetooth, electronics or batteries.

OUR STORY
I first got the idea for the Audiovase™ passive speaker while talking to my wife in our kitchen. When I walked in I saw she was washing dishes and listening to music on her phone which I thought was strange because we owned a Bluetooth speaker. When I asked “why aren’t you using our speaker?” She smiled and said “This is just easier.”
After thinking about our conversation I realized that Bluetooth speakers can be kind of a hassle for the following reasons:
- Bluetooth speakers can be expensive.
- Bluetooth doesn't always pair correctly.
- Bluetooth can drain your phone’s battery.
- Bluetooth speakers can run out of power.
In order to avoid these irritations many people listen to music and podcasts using only their phones but most smartphones have compact speakers that aren’t very loud which is why some use do-it-yourself solutions by putting their phones into bowls or cups. This may boost the volume slightly but cups and bowls can cause music to sound muffled or hollow which defeats the point of making it louder.
The Audiovase™ passive speaker is designed not only to boost volume levels but also to provide sound quality that is crystal clear allowing you to enjoy every second of what you’re listening to.
HOW IT WORKS
The Audiovase uses its unique patent-pending shape and surface geometry to boost and enhance sound quality. It also uses no internal electronics so you never have to worry about charging it during use.
So how does it work? As sound leaves your smartphone's speaker the sound waves reflect off the bottom surface and reverberate off the vertical walls as they exit the acoustic horn. The Audiovase's elliptical shape eliminates the muffled sound you get using cups and bowls by shortening the distance the sound waves need to travel as they reverberate off the vertical walls.
PRODUCT FEATURES
The Audiovase™ passive speaker has an internal cavity that accommodates your smartphone’s charging cord allowing you to quickly and easily charge your device during use without missing a beat. Its elliptical shape also leaves enough room to fit your smartphone and most protective cases so you can drop your phone into the Audiovase™ without worrying about taking the case off.
AVAILABLE COLORS
I explored many different color options throughout the design process but ultimately I settled on two for our initial offering: white with gray and purple trim and black with purple trim. We may offer more color options in the future but for now we'll stick with these beauties. Both options are easy to take with you when you’re on the go but they're also equally at home sitting casually on your bed side table or kitchen counter top.
DEVELOPMENT PROCESS
Sketching, CAD and computer renderings were all an important part of the design process but I found prototyping and process of elimination most valuable throughout development.
I 3D printed and tested dozens of prototypes using different shapes, sizes and proportions. Each one of these variations taught me something different about their effect on both volume and sound quality. These prototypes helped me understand what worked and what didn't and showed me how to incorporate the best attributes of each one into the final design.
In testing the final design I found that the Audiovase™ passive speaker boosts volume levels by about 10 decibels which is double the volume of your smartphone speaker alone!
FUTURE DEVELOPMENT
I am also currently in the process of developing a bigger version of the Audiovase to fit most large-format smartphones with their protective phone cases. Because this bigger version is still being developed it will be available at a later date (stay tuned) and will be recommended for the following devices:

A DEMONSTRATION
Because this is a new product many people have asked me to demonstrate how the Audiovase really works so I decided to make some videos. Click below to see how well the Audiovase stacks up against the iPhone 6s by itself, in a plastic cup and in a glass bowl.
MEASURABLE RESULTS
I also went the extra mile and tested the Audiovase using a decibel meter to show the measurable increase in sound. Decibels (dB) are a unit of measurement that increases exponentially instead of linearly so volume actually doubles when measurements increase by 10 dB. In other words, 85 dB is twice as loud as 75 dB.The Audiovase™ passive speaker uses its patent-pending surface geometry to increase volume levels by 10 dB which is double the volume of your smartphone's speaker alone.
