REALIZING THE POWER OF DESIGN
From its very infancy Frank Yang and his team at Simplehuman recognized that great design could help them gain a significant advantage in the saturated housewares market. In the early 2000's they partnered with Myk Lum and the team at LDA to help them create and develop not just great products but an innovative and disruptive brand. For more than a decade this partnership has helped bring to market some of the most beautiful and coveted products in housewares.
REDEFINING THE TRASH CAN
Simplehuman first established itself as a major player in the housewares industry by developing new and innovative trash cans. Their initial cans featured a stainless steel cylindrical body and a fluid pedal mechanism which far surpassed all other stainless steel trash cans on the market. These product offerings from Simplehuman created a new standard in high-end trash cans that would set the bar for years to come.
BUILDING ON SUCCESS
In 2008 Simplehuman partnered with LDA to expand their line of step cans. Building off the success of the Slim Step Can Simplehuman set out to design a Retro Can which would incorporate the superior functionality of the original step can with softer and more playful aesthetics. These new aesthetics would be most visible in the pedal, handle and lid details. While the final pedal and lid design was completed by myself it should be noted that Adam Wade designed the handle detail.
A MEMBER OF THE FAMILY
Years later the Retro Can is still going strong as a member of the Simplehuman trash can family. It is recognized by consumers the world over as a simple, elegant and quirky can solution that is welcome in any home.
